Caught this by accident a few weeks back.
When I heard all the hype about this movie some months ago as it hit the big screen, I just dismissed it the same way as I dismissed Power Rangers and Dragonball etc. Really had no interest in it other than being slightly intrigued by the presence of Ray Park in the cast.
However - and this is BIG however - having seen the movie now, it's IMMENSELY entertaining, with a seemingly non stop orgy of awesome set pieces, adrenaline pumping action and incredible SFX. I was also very impressed with the cast of the film, despite the comicky dialogue and general hamminess of the villains.
Christopher Ecclestone, despite a decidedly shoddy attempt at a Scottish accent, thrives in the role of evil megalomaniac, whilst lead Channing Tatum flexes all the right muscles to bring a strong hero factor, bouncing excellently off his buddy Marlon Wayans who gets the lion's share of one-liners.
With support from the ever relaible Dennis Quaid, the sumptuous Sienna Miller, the aforementioned Ray Park as a masked, silent ninja type who comes close to stealing the whole film, the surprisingly cast Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the scorching Rachel Nichols, the always solid Arnold Vosloo and a minor-ish role for Jonathan Pryce, with even Brendan Fraser getting an uncredited cameo.
But what makes this movie is the overall look. I mean by the end of the film I was almost gasping for a sequel, such was the enjoyment factor. Coming across as a mixture of Bond-style storyline, crossed with the structure and aesthetic appeal of Star Wars, the ending 30 minutes of this movie rival anything Lucas has comissioned. Don't believe me? Check it out for yourself, and I defy you not to enjoy it. A lot.
This is the most enjoyable film I've seen in years, and happily award it 9/10.
