I love Maiden, but I hate Download... After going to Wacken for the last two years, it quickly became apparent just how expensive Download is. Not just the little things like booze and grub, but shirts are way overpriced, and the ticket price itself is almost double that of Wacken. Whereas Download does admittedly have some great bands on, the nu-metal outweighs the true metal by a stunning ratio. And I am not a fan of nu-metal. Wacken is obviously run by metal fans who know what we want to see, as opposed to what we are told to see. Everything about Wacken makes you feel comfortable and proud to be a metalhead. Download in comparison is quite poorly organised and geared up purely as a money making racket. Nothing really wrong with that, I guess, but I'd just rather feel like I am treated with respect when I am at a festival.
Sorry to keep comparing the two festivals, but it's the only measuring stick I have. Gone are the innocent days of the old Monsters Of Rock at Donington, and in it's place is a fashion parade of schoolyard pop-metal, with the odd legend thrown in to shut up all the old timers.
Like me.
Wacken again in August, and then maybe Bloodstock. I'm too old to be farting about with these lightweight bubblegum kitchen radio boy bands.
I do still love Maiden though.
