It is widely reported that the mighty Manowar are preparing for a large scale tour of England, in support of their latest concept album, the epic Gods Of War.
This will mark the first time in over a decade that Manowar have played on these shores, and bassist/self-imposed band leader Joey DeMaio claims they intend to bring with them the immense stage show they have been using recently, including the full sized Viking Longboat which forms the backdrop for the show.
Complete with a massive pyrotechnics show, DeMaio reckons we English deserve nothing but the full-on Manowar live experience.
Can't say I disagree with the bloke, after all we are the inspiration for everything that Manowar is - they even titled their debut album Hail To England for Christ's sake.
Their latest opus, Gods Of war, is a concept album on a massive scale, and until very recently, even I found it very hard to come to terms with.
On first listen, I found it to be pompous, overblown and with way too many instrumental and spoken word parts. Too much even for Manowar.
But I gave it the benefit of the doubt and persevered until finally yesterday, I got what they are doing with it. It really is a superb piece of work, and if you are prepared to accept Manowar minus the over the top metal anthems, but with added over the top dramatics, then after a few listens you may come to the same conclusion as me.
Either that or you will go away thinking "fucking hell, they've really gone overboard this time", and never utter the word MANOWAR ever again.
Sure, the band do leave themselves wide open for ridicule at the hands of the unfaithful, but any self-respecting metalhead must find Manowar a guilty pleasure. I know I do.
I think they genuinely believe in what they are doing, and really want to give back to the fans who have stayed true over the years. They have weathered a storm of ridicule for two decades and never once did they sell out. That means a fucking lot to me, and I dont intend jumping on the bandwagon of Manowar-haters.
I will definitely go see them if and when they do decide to play over here again. Anybody else up for it?
